“Three in one”honestly sounds like the popular sales saying “Buy one get one free” or in this case “get two free”. And for the longest I unconsciously felt and acted like we had one main God with two ‘assistants’. I noticed that when people said things like “Jesus is God” or “Blood of God” I felt a little uncomfortable or uneasy. My perspective on this changed when I read the book of Colosians, it gave a brief description of who Christ is and talked about His Deity. The Trinity are three individual beings, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are not versions of who God the Father is. They each have their own identity. Knowing this I decided to go on a journey this year to know who The Trinity (God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit; The Triune God) are.
God the Father, first and foremost is a Father before even being a creator. He was a Father to the Son before the beginning of the World. With the death of man in the beginning, we were no longer able to come into His presence and we became slaves to sin. With our resurrection through the resurrection of Christ we have now become children to the Father. Thinking of the love of a father may lead to some misunderstandings, because we are drawn to think of His love as similar to that of our earthly fathers, flaws and all. However, it is the opposite, the love of our earthly fathers came from the example given by the love of our heavenly Father. It would be impossible to say God is love or that He loves if before our creation He did not show love in any form. It would mean that before us He was without love. Hence His identity as a Father, He showed love through the love of His son before the creation of the World. A true leader first of all shows before ordering, He showed us love through the love for His son as an example to follow to not only love ourselves but others.
"[19] For it pleased the Father for all the fullness [of deity—the sum total of His essence, all His perfection, powers, and attributes] to dwell [permanently] in Him (the Son), [20]
and through [the intervention of] the Son to reconcile all things to Himself, making peace [with believers] through the blood of His cross; through Him, [I say,] whether things on earth or things in heaven"
Colosians 1:19-20[AMP]
God the Son, the Saviour of the world. Through Christ we have been saved from the consequences of our sins and have been reconciled back to the Father. Also, by Him were all things created. In the beginning God spoke and created the world, John 1 lets us know that the word of God is Christ; “And the Word became flesh and lived among us…” (John 1:14a). So apart from the Savior of the world He is also the word of God. Jesus Christ is the head of the Church and the first born from the dead. The first born represents authority and rulings in the affairs of the family, in some instances the decision maker and provider. In the case of Christ being the first born and the Head of the Church, He is our saviour in every sense of the word, as He has also been given authority over everything both on earth and in the heavens. And as the Church we have access to this.
God the HolySpirit, popularly known as “Friend” to a lot of christians. The HolySpirit is the way to knowing who God (the Trinity) is.
“For what person knows the thoughts and motives of a man except the man’s spirit within him? So also no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.”
1 Corinthians 2:11[AMP]
While Christ was on earth, the Holy Spirit empowered Him on numerous occasions and in some cases led Him on the path to take. For instance, after Christ’s baptism, the Holy Spirit led him into the wilderness to be strengthened and prepare for His ministry. The Holy Spirit helps us to know the father intimately, the Holy spirit helps us understand His heart and His ways. He is most times considered “Friend” because He is there to strengthen, listen and empower. The Holy Spirit is so much more and I am honestly still learning about Him.
The Trinity as a whole is ONE and the same but are different beings. It may sound confusing and that is fine, the important thing is to keep searching and studying the word, to know more and understand the personalities of the Trinity. However to do this, the first step is to accept Jesus, because no one comes into the presence of the father unless through Him. Surrender to Him today and watch a shift in your life.
