Identity: what does that mean to you? Who do you say you are, also do people see your definition of yourself in you? As Christians our Identity is that we are God’s Children. We are God’s representative here on earth, not for ourselves but to fulfill the purpose of our lives here on earth. We should always remember that the world we live in today is a temporary one, think of it as a strange land that you are just passing through. We should not get too comfortable here on earth and forget that one day we would have to leave.

Many times we lose sight of this truth and are lost in our daily strife for achieving our set goals, which is good and all, but we forget or choose not to find out if such goals are tied to God’s purpose for us, OUR IDENTITY IN HIM. Living as a Christian here on earth should not be limited to a title or a box we tick on a form, or even going to church every Sunday, it should be our true Identity. Whenever I hear this message about earth just being a temporary place, I often think “Wow...that puts things in better perspective”. But I have come to a point where I no longer want this knowledge of who I am to be a perspective, but to be a reality I live daily. Everyday I wake up, I should remember that this is not my final home, in my decision making I should remember that I was placed here on earth for a purpose and ask the Holy Spirit if my decision ties with His.

These past weeks I have been learning about being a Living Sacrifice. I have come to know that our journey as Christians should not end at surrendering our lives to Him, we also need to surrender our will to Him (Romans 12:1). When we do this we tie ourselves to the purpose of our creation, we are no longer living for ourselves, but for Him. We should do this unconditionally, We shouldn’t think to ourselves “As long as this one thing in my life is constant, then every other thing can be controlled by God'' or “I surrender my will to Him, but this aspect of my life is off limits ( i.e. Career, relationships with others, and so on)”. This aspect I admit is something I am struggling deeply with, but I have come to realize it becomes easy when you look to Him for strength. Let all your life decisions be His will for you. This goes past “is the decision I’m about to make a sin or not”, God may not want you to do something that in all context is not a sin.

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed and progressively changed by the renewing of your mind , so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect ”

- ‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:2.‬

That is why we shouldn't compare ourselves to others, God deals with us individually. The purpose He has for Child A differs from that of Child B. The decision to surrender our will to Him, is a wise one, who better to be the one in charge of our lives than the one who created it. The inventor of any product always knows the true purpose that product was created for. Don’t look else where to find your Identity, but from the one who created everything including you. The surrender of our will to Him should be total, even the things that we consider minor is important to Him. We know that there is nothing too big for God to handle, but often we forget there is nothing too ‘small’ as well. We forget that He also wants to hear about and direct the things in our lives we consider insignificant. I strife to be totally lost in His will, to the point where I ask for His direction in things as random as what to eat and what footpath to take daily.

To have an Identity as a child of God, we must first of all surrender our lives to Jesus Christ, God’s son who He sent down to earth to die for our sins, to bring us into His presence. This is a free gift given to us by Him who loves us more than anything in the World. Give your life and will to Him today and begin to fulfill His purpose for your life.
